I work with students with special needs in a Preschool Early Education Program. We have four groups of 8 students that we see during our week. Our students have a variety of special needs. Some have physical disabilities that need to be addressed. There are also students with developmental delays and sensory issues. They need a wide variety of multi-sensory learning materials to meet their needs. Our students range in ages from 3-5.
Our work is important because this program is usually our student's first experience in a classroom setting.
Our children learn through play in individualized teach settings and small group settings. A multi-disciplinary team of teachers and therapists work together to make sure that we meet all the needs of our students.
My Project
Our students have a Safe Place that is available to them if they need calming. We would like to place a mirror in the Safe Place to help our students to see their expressions as they go through the phases of calming.
We also need to replace some of our well loved materials.
Our students are ages 3-5 and need opportunities to learn to handle books. We would like to restock our library with some bright new books that will be safe for little hands.
Our students also have goals to work on turn taking skills and sequencing. New materials will give our students more opportunities to work on these skills with their teachers and their peers.
Our classroom also has some students who benefit from sensory experiences. We could use materials that would provide visual stimulation and vibrating massage for tactile experiences.
