Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Some children may need a behavioral approach, whereas other children may need a sensory approach." - Temple Grandin
My students are all unique and learn in many different ways.
They are curious and need to be able to actively participate in their learning environment.
Our school has students ranging from pre-K to fourth grade. My classroom consists of 15 amazing children. They range in age from three to five. Seven of my students have Individualized Education Plans. The students with disabilities in my classroom vary. I have students who are unable to walk independently; students who are non-verbal; and students who have sensory needs that impact their education and social skills on a daily basis. My students come from a variety of cultures, socioeconomic sectors and family structures. Although they are all unique, they all have a common goal to be lifelong learners. They are curious and energetic. They play and move to learn. Even at a young age, they learn to work together to explore their environment and solve problems. My students have so much to offer, they teach me every day!
My Project
My students need to be able to relate to the Centers in their learning environment so they are able to maximize their learning experiences. My students will have access to multicultural music, art materials and pretend play materials. Because my students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, this will encourage them to actively explore and engage in each Center.
In the Art Center, students will use multicultural pencils and crayons to represent themselves, family members and friends.
They can use the crinkle paper to represent differently types and color of hair. In Pretend and Learn, they can dress like a variety of animals, as well as in multicultural dress to represent their different cultures. The soft community helpers can be used to explore their community and people who aren't present in their lives. Students will also be able to express themselves through music with the rhythm sticks.
The art materials, dress up clothes, CD player and blocks can be easily accessed by each student regardless of their learning style and abilities. This will encourage independence and active participation within their learning. Through this promotion of independence my students' confidence and desire to learn will grow.
