George Evans said, "Every student can learn. Just not on the same day or in the same way." That quote hangs on the wall in our classroom and it couldn't be more perfect. My students are an amazing, curious group of 3rd-5th graders in our self-contained classroom. Most of them come from a low socioeconomic household and don't get an opportunity to experience typical life experiences that we take for granted. They are excited about learning and love any kind of hands on experience that is presented to them.
Our Extended School Year program is a safe place for them.
All of my students qualify for full day summer services. They work hard all year long to achieve their unique goals and over their summer is no exception. All of my students are on a kindergarten/ first grade level in reading, writing, and math. Retention of learned materials is very challenging for them. They also need assistance when generalizing their skills which is why a variety of materials on the same topic is critical. They are fun loving and very socially appropriate. They make the most progress when they're having fun learning through all of their senses.
My Project
My students and I will be attending the Extended School Year program this Summer at our elementary school. On the last day of school, an unfortunate accident occurred, a custodian accidentally threw away the bins that were packed with all of my classroom materials needed for the program. Those materials included a lot of Lakeshore Learning items, art, science, reading, writing, and math materials, IEP goal binders, and student work samples.
My students need consistency and structure to maximize their success.
They are all on different levels each with unique learning styles. All of my materials were customized to their individual IEP goals and needs.
I will continue to have these wonderful students in the Fall and the loss of those materials directly impacts them. Our Summer program starts in July and I'm at a loss for the amount of materials that have been taken away from them that they have become familiar and comfortable with using this past school year. Thank you for your time and consideration.
