Our school is close to two military bases and many of my students are the children of deployed military personnel. The school they attend is an older, urban public school in the largest city in the largest state in the United States.
My first graders are struggling to learn the basics---math, reading and science.
Nearly half of them receive services for ESL, Special Education and Indian Education (JOM). Most of my class are below grade-level but they love being in school because they love learning. Their smiles melt my heart.
All of my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch but we are not a Title I school that means that my wonderful first graders have all of the needs and few of the resources that are available to other low income children.
My Project
We do math for 90 minutes per day, and we write for an additional 45 minutes. Each child uses approximately 3 pencils per week. They also use black dry erase markers on their individual whiteboards. These are supplies that are not carried over from one year to the next. They are expended each year and need to be replaced. I am desperate.
Even before the recent earthquake that closed our building for a week due to structural damage, our district was facing a very difficult funding shortfall.
At the beginning of the year, we had been told there was absolutely no money for supplies. I was so desperate that I asked the army recruiter for pencils. Now my small stash of supplies is only a memory. My students need and deserve more. I am asking for basic supplies for my first grade class.
I need dry erase markers, pencils, erasers and other basic supplies so my students will be able to do their math problems and writing exercises. In addition, I need some scissors, crayons, tape, glue sticks and staples for my students so they can make their books.
My students do not have funds for school supplies and they rely on the school to provide what they need. I am asking for basic supplies for my students so they can thrive in the 21st century.
