Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Dual Language program provides students the possibility to become bilingual and bi-literate individuals in both English and Spanish. Not only are they learning to speak in both languages, but they are also writing and reading as well. They receive instruction from two teachers in both languages on a daily basis.
Our students are amazing because although learning two languages is definitely an added challenge, many rises up to it and soar.
Their hard work and ability to transition from one language to the other is truly inspiring.
My Project
As a teacher in the dual language program in first grade, I see about 48 students each day (2 groups of 24). One of the main challenges in a dual language is time. Therefore, smooth transitions and organization are key. The name tags will help me learn all of the students' names faster. They will also be useful when the students go on field trips to getting visits from dance, art, or any other visiting teachers. The caddies will be used to keep all our supplies organized and ready to go.
Also, having a double amount of kids means that wear and tear happen at a faster rate.
We are constantly using our mini whiteboards and after 7 years in dual language, many of them are falling apart. I am looking to replenishing one of my sets in order to be able to have every student participate in our mini lessons for math and language arts. Having one marker for each student will be helpful in that each student will be assigned their personal marker. This will increase their sense of responsibility since they will have to be a little more mindful about how they use it and will make transitions smoother because they will know exactly what marker belongs to them vs. arguing about which one is their marker.
