I teach kindergarten at a large urban school district. Our school is a high-needs status school with over 90% of our students qualifying for free and reduced lunches.
Most of my students are English Language learners from low income homes.
Many have very few or no books of their own to read at home. A lot of my students are not read aloud to at home. My students are excited about learning and love school. I want my students to learn to their fullest potential. I want them to always stay excited and committed to learning.
My Project
Having Weekly Readers and Time magazines will help my students stay excited about learning. The magazines are non-fiction text with topics that vary from holidays to safety to insects and more. These magazines will help teach our students new vocabulary, help with reading fluency and comprehension, improve critical thinking skill, help students learn to make inferences and predictions, and learn information from graphs, charts, text boxes, illustrations, headings and titles.
Weekly Readers and Time have helped inspire students to learn.
Students get excited about having their own copy in which they can follow along with and then take home. Students will then be able to share what they've learned with their families.
