My students are excitable, well behaved and love to play the ukuleles in my music class!
The music program has been in place for quite a number of years but the focus has been primarily choral music so there are not many instrumental resources.
I come from a marching band background and am trying to continue the choral stuff but add some instrumental as well.
Our school is located in a middle income neighborhood. We have a student population of nine hundred and ninety-five with the number of free and reduced price lunch at thirty-five percent.
We have a few ukuleles but our school has grown and we need some more. This is in an area where funding can be an issue sometimes. I would love to be able to develop a performing group to reach out to the community. The ukulele is an unique instrument, yet easy for small hands to play. Melody and chords can be very easily taught due to the simple fingering. Many times at the Elementary Music level the emphasis is heavy on the vocal side. I was a band director for 20 years and realize that there is a very important side to instrumental learning.
