Drums are the heartbeat of the musical world. My students love to play instruments, and also love when they can work together. More drums would allow more students to do both at the same time!
In our urban, Title I school, I see about 400 students every week for music classes.
Our students come from diverse backgrounds and speak many languages, including Spanish, Albanian, and Arabic. Many of them come from single parent homes, or have parents who work multiple jobs to make ends meet. These students love coming to music each week! They ask me each week if we are playing instruments or working in groups. They love any activity that allows them to do both!
My Project
My students need three tubanos for us to use in our drum lessons. We have recently added drum circles into our music curriculum. The students have learned and practiced new rhythm patterns, experienced playing as an ensemble, and composed for drums. Unfortunately, most students are stuck sharing a drum or using very old or small drums. The addition of three tubanos into our music classroom would not only get more students playing at once, but would add expand our ensemble's sound by adding some of the lower sounds that the tubano provides. This would also lend itself to group work, because we could divide the class into collaborative groups and still have enough drums for them all.
The addition of these tubano drums into our music classroom will give more students a chance to play at once, and allow for us to have enough drums for small group work.
Please help us get these drums into our classroom so we can start soon!
