Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever read something that you just did not understand? Most of the time, it is something that is highly technical or in an area we don't understand. My speech/language delayed children want to learn these skills to read text expected of them in their regular education classroom.
My students attend a school that is considered very high poverty.
Our school has many children from bi-cultural and bilingual families. We have some students that have intact families. Other children are being raised by one parent, a grandparent, or are in foster care. As the economy has tumbled, more of my students have become homeless and live in shelters or are bunking with other family members. Therefore, our public school provides free breakfast and lunch and even an evening meal for the students who stay after school.
My particular students also have other learning problems. Many of them are diagnosed with learning disabilities, autism, ADHD, Tourettes and medical problems caused by lead in their environment. They struggle with basic language skills. This impacts their ability to comprehend what they read. They often do not understand the main idea, inferences, details, story sequence and other important reading skills. They lag behind their peers in their regular ed classroom.
My Project
The 4 comprehension kits are by Lakeshore. Lakeshore does an amazing job of creating interesting and vibrant materials. The 4 reading kits are written at a level that my students can read but are still challenged. They are given multiple ways to show their understanding of the material read. The passages are just the right length that it will not overwhelm my students. Yet, the material will challenge them.
There is more to reading than just reading the words on a page.
A person needs to be able to understand what they read, make predictions, understand inferences, figurative language and identify the main idea of the passage. My students need so much help in this area. They want to do well in school. They also want to do well on the high stakes testing that is done so frequently. They all want to be proficient in reading
