This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students in Spanish for Heritage Speakers come from families that speak Spanish but very few of them have had formal education in their native language. Most of my students struggle with reading and writing skills, which can be transferred from one language to another. My goal is to help them develop those abilities so they become better readers, writers, and critical thinkers.

My students in Workplace Learning classes are very diverse in terms of ethnicity, language, ability, and socio-economic background.

In this class students develop the soft skills they will need to succeed in the workplace and college.

My Project

My Spanish-speaking students desperately need to improve their reading skills. But how do we provide reading opportunities that are age-appropriate and engaging? Our library carries very few books in Spanish and access to technology is limited (15 world language teachers share one 30-chromebook cart).

I would love to provide my students the opportunity to explore and choose texts to read on a rotating basis.

My idea is to create a Chromebook station in my classroom, which students will access for independent reading time. They will write reflections, questions, wonders, connections, etc. about what they are reading. I plan on using my students' writing to inform my instruction and help them become better writers and critical thinkers.
