This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach an active and sometimes restless group of 2nd graders on Chicago's Southside. My school and it's surrounding neighborhood lack the resources to fully stock classrooms with the supplies they need for hands-on learning. Research has proved that children learn through "doing." It also makes for a long school day for both student and teacher when the students are not actively involved in their own learning process.
It has become difficult with my class, to do fun hands-on activities often because so few of my students have any school supplies. Some students in my class started with supplies but not enough to sustain them for the entire school year! Such resources include children's' scissors, glue sticks, tape, paint, markers, crayons, colored pencils, white drawing/poster paper, construction paper, pencils, and two electric pencil sharpeners.
The above is a simple list of basic "school supplies" found in schools across the city. Unfortunately this is what is lacking in mine. I feel it is important for my students to have an "arts" area in their rooms that have the materials I will need to do more active-learning lessons and projects with them.
