My students need sensory, movement and play with the use of sports equipment and sensory objects, especially the trampoline to relieve anxiety and to help them refocus throughout the day.
My students are wonderful individuals who receive special education services in a self-contained classroom. They try hard to access curriculum that focuses on building their adaptive, social/emotional, & overall academic skills. My kids need tremendous support when completing tasks with consistent & precise feedback, praise, & movement. They are able to learn new concepts with accommodations such as hands-on tools, brain-breaks, 1:1 help, & small groups with many opportunities for transitions.
My kids are often surprised with themselves when they grasp a concept that was initially difficult.
Sometimes, they may think it would be easier to quit but the use of a physical learning environment helps them refocus. They frequently utilize a wiggle chair, yoga ball, cushion on chair, or stand during small groups so their body has freedom for movement. Their brain breaks include physical movement of yoga movements or dancing via Go Noodle.
Their academic struggles has left them frustrated with learning that they sometimes begin to dislike school. Our classroom has offered them a different approach to learning & consequently has changed their demeanor toward learning. Our parents have shared that their child truly enjoys attending school & looks forward to seeing their wonderful teachers!
My Project
The materials requested would tremendously help my kids who have varying disabilities. Having these items for a sensory area in our classroom will encourage social interaction by working on communication & cooperation skills, satisfy visual and tactile sensory, improve mood and behavior, and help with overall use of movement (balance & body strength).
The Sensory Fidget Toys, the Mini Rainmaker, the Kooshball & Tangles, and the JellyBeadz will target tactile sensory stimulation for improved attention skills and deter them from engaging in negative behaviors.
The LED Calming Sensory Light will target visual sensory stimulation and improve the mood for our kids with emotional disability. The Foam Roller, Twisting Fitness Boards, Trampoline and Balance Ball will help our kids balance their own body weight and help them develop fitness awareness. Cooperation or social interaction will advance with the use of the Champion Physical Education pack as they play team sports. Additionally, communication skills may improve as they verbally share their experiences with these activities and build meaningful relationships. A majority of my kids also have speech language impairment.
According to Baranek, integration of sensory integration activities are meant to help the nervous system modulate, organize, and integrate information from the environment, resulting in future adaptive responses. Thus, our kids can transfer these processes to their academics as they can readily refocus and process new concepts fluidly.
