This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
MY FIRST YEAR IN KINDERGARTEN!
My students come from an exciting and diverse district.
Our city and our school district are prime examples of how people from all walks of life can come together to create a sense of community. My students are part of a wonderfully close-knit community that has had many challenges. They live in a low income part of Philadelphia and the neighborhood can be difficult, with many challenges.
These kids need to feel success!
My students have not been given a lot and I try to provide them with everything that I can. Many of my students receive free or reduced rate breakfast and lunch. This year it is my goal to make all my students feel welcome and comfortable in our classroom.
I had no idea what to expect. Many of my little ones came to me not knowing how to properly handle books. As a result, sadly much of my personal classroom library books have been mishandled. We do not have a functioning library at school so their love for books begins with me.
They ARE our future!
My Project
I am an avid proponent that children need actual books in their hands to learn to love literature. Black and white xerox copies will not be enough!!! They need to feel and handle real books.
These first year learners will have mishaps with their books.
This is when they learn. I want all children to understand and love books! Students of all ages need to learn to respect literature and if I foster that in kindergarden, they will keep that love their entire life.
I want my students to have a literacy rich environment, and gain an ctul sense of the importance of books.
