Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We love to create. Wouldn't it be great if we could do it every time we were inspired to do so? Currently we are very limited in our ability to express ourselves creatively. With new supplies, I hope to be able to allow my students access to the creative process on a regular basis. Help us make art.
My school is urban, 100% Title 1 funded, and most students are learning English.
All are eager, intelligent, spontaneous and creative. They love literature and interacting with text. They come from low literate backgrounds but are closing that gap rapidly. Their favorite authors so far are Kevin Henkes and Oliver Jeffers. They love to find the small details and the humor in the illustrations. They practically explode in happiness when they are allowed to be creative through drama or painting. They become shockingly quiet and focused. Their ability to concentrate seems to double when they are working independently on a project. Some of my least capable readers are my most creative artists. They often demonstrate their learning through dramatic reenactments, or the creation of storyboards. Everyone shines in some way. Allowing them different modes with which to express themselves allows each student to show their brilliance in a way that is appropriate to their personal style.
My Project
I am requesting 12 sets of Tempera Cakes and 1 set of Tempera Paints with Rack. I use tempera paint a lot in my classroom because it's all we have. There is a lot waste because it is difficult to return the paint to the bottle once it is out. With these tempera cake pallets, every child will have their own choice of color, not what I have decided to pour out that day. The clean up will be much easier because the cakes stay put and just dry up until we wet them again for the next use. No more trying to save unused paint. I usually do one art activity a week related to the literature we are currently reading. Sometimes we draw how the book made us feel. Other times we try to emulate the illustrator and recreate our own version of a favorite part the book. Either way, students become accustomed to connecting text to experience on different levels. It is important for them to have a personal experience that connects them to literature. Art is an easy way through which this can be accomplished.
Being able to do art projects with my students makes them so happy.
Frequently I want to do projects with them but because of lack of resources and support, I just don't. If they can take out these paints and use them on a weekly basis and then store them easily for the next time, it will make it possible for all of us to enjoy making art. I can't wait to be able to share with them all the ideas I have for creating art when we actually have the needed materials. First grade will be fun again!
