Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a public Colorado elementary school located in a high-poverty community. Our school is a turnaround school that has shown headline-worthy academic growth over the past few years. We work under the motto, "Happy kids learn more!" and are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure our students' success.
I work as a reading interventionist and the students I serve are loving, enthusiastic and want to learn how to read and write for the first time.
My Project
Our district has already announced devastating budget cuts for next year due to the impact of COVID-19. Our school funding was already low, and next year will be even lower. We need support to get basic materials in the hands of our amazing students. Although we have been teaching remotely throughout this Spring, it's just not the same, and we are not able to teach as effectively as we would face to face. Our students will have a lot of learning to make up when we get back in school. It is more important than ever to have the basic materials we need to teach our students effectively.
Our teachers are incredibly dedicated to making lessons meet the needs and interests of our students.
Because of this, we do not use many workbooks or packaged curriculum materials. However, in light of significant budget cuts, we are worried about not having the most basic supply of all- paper(!) to make our lessons come together. We simply need boxes of copy paper to print articles, reading passages, interactive note-taking templates, graphic organizers, and so much more to make our teaching meet the needs of each and every unique student in our classrooms!
My students and I so deeply appreciate that there are so many people out there who want to support us! Thank you so much for considering our project and helping us keep learning when we are able to get back to school.
