This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are hungry, not only for the food in the cafeteria, but also for the lessons in their books. Our school is a Title I school located in the Bankhead neighborhood of Atlanta. We have approximately 350 sixth grade students who we expose to a variety of learning experiences. Getting students to read and write is a daily challenge. In my classroom, the students have a wide range of reading abilities with the majority of them reading below grade level. Many don't want to read because it is too difficult while others choose not to read because they're not interested in the textbooks. Finding relevant and relatable material for middle schoolers is a daily challenge. We need resources that hold my students' attention while promoting meaningful discussion.
My Project
We need basic school supplies, such as curriculum, books, a pencil sharpener, and a volume monitor. I carefully chose these resources to help us meet our educational standards. We, equipped with these resources and support materials, will work to build literacy skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Specifically, the Yacker Tracker will allow students to control their volume levels during classroom discussion and collaboration. The student novels will be an addition to our classroom library; kids need books that pique their interest. The pencil sharpener will allow my students to be prepared to take notes and complete written assignments. Students will study poetry, learn to read cursive, and master English grammar. The resource books will be used throughout the year to design literacy instruction.
All of these items will be used with one purpose in mind: my goal is to inspire students to love learning, and to enhance their literacy!
With these materials, my classroom will be able to function more effectively and more efficiently. My students will be able to complete a full year's worth of literacy projects. Students will become better-prepared to compete globally.
