Teaching Native American students has opened my eyes to a culture and way of life that most Americans rarely consider. Poverty and addiction are quite common on this reservation, which has created a reality in which 90% of our kids are considered "at risk." This means that most of our students may not finish high school, let alone go to college. I want my students to gain the skills that they need to compete in this world, and that world is filled with technology.
My Project
I teach on a Navajo Indian reservation and technology is scarce. The world is moving rapidly toward technology, so it is impossible for our students to compete if they do not have computer skills. Our school is small and my students seldom get to use the computer lab. I believe that a classroom set of Fire HD eight tablets will "electrify" their learning experience. They will be able to use apps to practice grammar and vocabulary skills rather than worksheets. Many apps allow them to submit assignments electronically, which is so important to this school. We have serious paper restrictions. It is so important to prepare these kids for the future, and that future will probably include more technology than we can possibly imagine. The number of educational apps give a glimpse into the future of education. Please help my wonderful Navajo students to get the tools that they need to succeed!
