My Students

My students work hard but many struggle. They need books that will interest them and make them think.

We are a rural school and many read below grade level.

I want to give them a variety of options to choose from to try and engage them and bridge that literacy gap. Part of the Common Core standards is finding themes across multiple texts but they have to have texts they will actually read.

My Project

Students read Night each semester as a class. My students need copies of Never Fall Down, Between Shades of Gray, First They Killed My Father and other human rights and survival books to compare with Night. I want them to have several options to compare to it, to see how things have changed (or not) and to think outside their small town. I also want them to see how one person can make a difference, even a young one person.

Students will increase literacy, increase their awareness of the broader world and the treatment of their fellow man.

Hopefully, it will inspire some of them to be the change the world needs as well.
