My students come from difficult backgrounds, ones I can't even imagine. We are a Title I school with 100% free/reduced lunch. My students face challenges every day that I could never dream of. What I love about my students, though, is that no matter what hardship they have faced in life they refuse to let people put them in a box. They are bright young men and young women. They push themselves to do better. They are fighters. They crave education. They want to learn.
They want to be better than what society tells them they are.
This school year, we are moving to a block schedule! That means I will have approximately 90 students each semester. Many of my students come from a background of poverty, so I would love to be able to provide each student with a binder to keep their Daily Language Standards Practice in.
At the end of the fall semester, I will be able to reuse these same binders for the spring semester students!
That way at least 180 students will be able to use these binders. Hopefully, depending on the condition of the binders at the end of the school year, I will be able to reuse them again for the following year.
This year, we will be doing a daily vocabulary lesson to help students expand their vocabulary. These words will come from the SAT vocabulary list as well as from the texts we read in class. We will also complete a daily grammar lesson, which will benefit the students' writing skills. Having the binders will provide a place for students to keep up with their assignments and stay organized.
