I teach at an inner city magnet school in Indiana. The classroom is filled with energetic third graders. It is important for them to have materials close by as they are working to understand difficult concepts.
The students love being independent and taking responsibility for their learning and materials in the classroom.
This is a challenge for them when they do not have easy access to the hands on materials they use each day.
I need a place to store math manipulatives. They need a place they can go to get what they need.
My Project
The storage shelving unit I am requesting has baskets that slide out so students can pull a basket and take it to their work space. I can also easily pull materials for student use or ask students to go get what is needed. My students engage in investigative math lessons where they use all kinds of manipulatives to help them solve problems in a hands-on inquiry based way. My classroom has very little storage space. Right now the materials are stored in a large cabinet that is crammed full with a lot of other teaching materials. Having a storage unit that is at a level that the students can reach and access math materials will help them to be more independent in their learning. They will know that when they need a resource they can go and get it without asking me. This will truly help the day to day function of our classroom, giving more time for teaching and learning.
