My students love to touch and manipulate objects. Their curiosity and desire to learn about how things work is amazing. When they can get their hands into their work they focus better. They love to create and build with all sorts of materials.
They especially enjoy using any kind of STEM materials such as building blocks or even just pipe cleaners.
I am so proud of their willingness to keep trying whenever they are struggling in the classroom. They enjoy working to redesign, rebuild, or just create something completely new. My students are so proud of the work they do and it really shows in the end products.
My Project
The goal of this project is get more students involved in STEM projects in our school by starting a STEM club that will meet three times a week to accommodate a variety of grade levels. Students will build and design with the Discovering STEM kits such as simple machines, mechanics, wheels and axles and construction. LEGO are always a hit with kids of any age. The motorized kits will be especially interesting to our older elementary students.
My hope is that we can expand interest in STEM activities for all students in our elementary grades.
The addition of a specific place and time dedicated to STEM activities will surely be a big hit. In addition, my students will be able to collaborate with older students during this STEM time which will help to build relationships.
