First graders love to touch and manipulate objects. They thrive when they can get their hands into their work. They focus better when they have something to move, twist, turn or hold while they are learning new concepts.
STEM projects are especially engaging for first graders since they are creating or building in some way.
They enjoy working to solve problems, redesign, rebuild, or just create something completely new. My students are so proud of the work they do and it really shows in the end products. They love to share their creations online with their parents!
My Project
I want to provide my students the opportunity to build and create through a variety of STEM activities such as Legos, polydron squares, and engineering STEM sets. My students will learn to follow directions in each kit. They will learn to work to problem-solve as they build. In addition, they will learn sequencing as they construct each kit.
The STEM activities that I am requesting will give my students the opportunity to build on their own while keeping their distance from their classmates.
Plus, we will use these activities on the much dreaded indoor recess days. My students are not a fan of indoor recess, but these kits may change their minds on our cold winter days. We will use the pocket chart to post the STEM activity schedule on the days of indoor recess. The Lego tools for separating the blocks will be very useful for my students' small hands.
