Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Welcome to our school! We are a Title I elementary school in a low-income urban neighborhood. Eighty-six percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch, and 100% receive free breakfast daily.
The children may not have much, but they are kind, inquisitive, and love to learn.
The school is the heart of the community, and our library is the heart of the school. As the librarian, I do my best to fill my students' lives with quality books, the joy of reading, and tools for learning.
My Project
We are converting our library furniture from uncomfortable tables and chairs to flexible, varied seating. Many students prefer to sit on cushions on the floor. Their work, however, might get stepped on!
We need ten folding lap desks so students who sit on the floor have a table for their class Chromebook and paperwork.
Allowing students to sit in a way they find comfortable has been shown to increase engagement and learning. Our flexible seating plan includes cafe tables, comfy armchairs, and floor level tables. These lap desks will accommodate students who like to sit on the floor but need somewhere to put their papers and Chromebooks.
