My students need 5 iPads for some technology in the classroom. I started at a new school this year and had to leave ALL of my student technology behind.
I need some technology in the classroom for my students. Currently, we have none! In the past, I received laptops from Donors Choose and Chevron through the "Fuel Your School" program. However, my old site required I leave that technology behind. Therefore, I have nothing for my current class.
My class addresses the needs of the youngest kindergarten students in the district.
We have only two classrooms that teach these students, so many of my students come from across town to attend school. Since we are a district program, I teach both Title I and nonTitle I students. My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds with different needs. In addition to my native English speakers, I also have students who speak limited to no English. Many of my students don't have the access to technology at home, while others do. I want all of my students to have an equal opportunity to utilize technological resources in an age appropriate manner.
My Project
Technology plays a large part in the new Common Core State Standards. Many districts in California, including mine, have already started to implement these new standards in the classroom. I want to make sure my students get started off on the right foot with the exposure to technology at an early age. Any exposure to technology I can provide them with now, will be of benefit in the future.
Many children have heard of an iPad, but have never actually touched one. This is our opportunity to put technology, literally, in their hands. The iPads are easily portable and not as imposing as a big computer may be to younger children. I'm hoping through Chevron's Fuel Your School Campaign, I will once again be able to provide my students with that very important early exposure to technology.
You'd be surprised how many students come to school who have never touched a computer, have no idea how to operate a computer mouse, or have never used a touch screen.
We can't expect our students to take standardized tests on computers if we don't give them every opportunity possible in the classroom to use technology at an early age, on a daily basis. If we want students to be prepared for the future, I need to start that preparation at an early age. This preparation starts in kindergarten.
