My students need a few basic supplies; 20 dry-erase boards, a pencil sharpener, and 24 pairs of scissors. They need these items to make it through the end of the year!
Our pencil sharpener has died, our scissors have walked away, and the whiteboards are on "stripe" (they have lots of scratch stripes all over them)! We still have 9 weeks of school left and will find it difficult to make it successfully without these basics!
The 19 students in my first grade class attend a public Title I school in a small, rural town in South Carolina.
Most of them live in single parent households with a parent who is trying to make ends meet in a town with the 2nd highest unemployment rate of the state at 17%. These parents are always asking about what we need and are willing to send in anything they can to help our classroom, but I know that some things are just not possible and I do not want to put an extra burden on them.
My Project
There are many things we would love to have in our classroom, especially in the technology area. However, we also know that there are some things that we need. Since we are just beginning a unit in social studies on needs and wants, this is a perfect example to show the students! We have to have a pencil sharpener and scissors in order to do basic first grade work. We use whiteboards all the time to practice math, spelling, and to play fun review games. The boards we are using now are very old and scratched up. They don't erase very well because of the scratches. I recently came across a great deal on some dry erase markers for each student, so now all we need are the boards! If we have these basic supplies, we will be able to do our daily school activities. There is no fancy lesson plan that goes with this request, as these items are usually standard classroom materials.
A pencil sharpener, whiteboards, and scissors may not seem like much, but these items will make a big difference in our classroom on a daily basis.
These items will help this class to finish the school year and will give next year's class a great start!
