My Students

I am a Special Education Teacher. All of my students have some type of disability. They all have either Mild Intellectual Disability or Moderate Intellectual Disability and many of them have multiple diagnosis.

My students have various levels of ability, and they all have an IEP.

An IEP is an Individual Education Plan for students who have been identified as having a disability. We are in a self-contained classroom in which the students are in a smaller class size (maximum of 12 students) in order to receive more direct instruction than they would in a larger, typical class size of up to 20.

Some of the other disabilities my students have in addition to intellectual disabilities include autism, down syndrome, and cri du chat.

My Project

Help me give my students some very much needed sensory items. Many of the students in my class, about half, have very high sensory needs which cause them to wander around the room and often find and touch things that they should not, such as the playing in the sink and trash cans. We have one weighted sensory blanket already and so many of them love it! We need MORE weighted sensory items to go around! We also have a need for oral sensory items, in order to keep unsafe items out of our students' mouths! Having these sensory items really helps the students remain calm and feel safe!
