Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach PPCD. Our classroom is filled with books, laughter, music, and the development of language! My elementary school is a Title I school with the majority low-income students in Austin. Our students are socially, racially, and economically diverse. Almost 20% of our students are receiving Special Education services.
Teachers at my school work exceptionally hard to accommodate all of our special learners and find ways to teach outside the box.
Our students are eager to learn, eager to grow, and eager to be successful! We represent the diversity of our unique neighborhood and city.
My Project
These sensory materials, flexible seating chairs, and classroom toys will provide my students the sensory input they are seeking. We have several students this year that are seeking extra sensory activities throughout their school day.
With these materials we will be able to offer more appropriate ways for my students to get their needs met.
The rocking chair and Rock Around will give my students ways to move their body safely in the classroom. The pressure vest and weighted blanket will give them some ways to calm down in the classroom. I think these materials will be helpful to all my students. My hope is that by providing additional sensory input, my students will be able to develop more appropriate play and social skills. For example, while we are painting students can sit in flexible seating and take sensory breaks so they can focus on the activity.
