Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students need reading materials that will capture their attention, allow their imaginations to run wild, and get them invested in reading! Giving them material that will allow them to act out scenes in a play and get them engaged in the world around them will be the key!
My sixteen 4th-6th grade students have academic special needs and attend an elementary school in California.
In our school, over 81% of the students receive free or reduced lunch and over 47% of the students are english language learners. My students are passionate, creative, and engaging, however, they could definitely benefit from more exciting and fun reading materials to keep their attention.
My Project
I am requesting two different types of reading materials for my students. I am requesting the play adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which will enable my students to accomplish two things simultaneously. It will allow them to become engaged in an exciting, imaginative story that will capture their attention and get them invested in reading. Additionally, as my students have academic special needs many of them lack confidence in their school work. By giving my students the opportunity to come up to the front of the class daily and perform parts of the play, they will build their self-esteem by participating and cooperating with their peers. Not only will this improve their academic & social skills but it will help to build a positive culture in the classroom.
The second reading material is Time for Kids. This magazine will enable my students to become engaged with events happening in their community and world. It will emphasize the point that we "read to learn."
This project is critical because my students are the grade levels where they no longer are "learning to read" but are "reading to learn." But because my students have academic special needs, we often need to work on reading intervention.
Intervention programs often make my students aware that they are grade levels behind. By giving my students chapter books and new stories appropriate for their grade levels it will show them how smart they truly are while emphasizing the importance of reading.
