Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a low socioeconomic area in a historic part of Texas. They are very interested in joining the workforce by becoming doctors, nurses, EMTs, firefighters, coaches, and athletes.
Many of these students will be required to pass Anatomy and Physiology in college and we were able to get the class on campus for the first time this year, but we need pigs to dissect!
This is a very fast-paced class in college and many students fail out because of it. We want our students to be college prepared and be successful in life. We are so excited that we are able to expose our students to this field and the opportunities to have experiences that will benefit them now and help support their success later in their educational journeys.

My Project
My students are very visual and hands-on learners. I chose fetal pigs because cats are limited and extremely expensive right now. Fetal pigs are actually a better specimen to dissect and luckily, they're cheaper now!
By dissecting fetal pigs, which are analogous to humans, they will have a firsthand look at what organs systems look like and how they interact so they can transfer that knowledge to the human body!
As we progress though the body systems, we will dissect the pigs with focus on that body system. We will continue to use the same pigs to dissect as we progress through the curriculum.
