Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are all recent immigrants from Cape Verde, Vietnam, Dominican Republic, Iraq, Somalia, Honduras, and more. Many of my students have only been in the country a few months. Most of my students live in poverty and will be the first in their families to graduate college. Some will be the first in their families to graduate high school.
My students are all eager, curious, and excited learners.
They have faced incredible obstacles in their lives and demonstrate an inspiring amount of resiliency and perseverance. After school, many of them work full time or provide childcare for their families. Many students are insecure, many have experienced intense trauma in their lives, and many are homeless.
My Project
Every day in class, my students participate in independent reading. Consistent research has demonstrated that the more students to see protagonists who look like them, the more students can feel connected and inspired by the book. Please help us send students reading into the summer with this collection of various novels and nonfiction books that celebrate strong people of color accomplishing amazing things.
Students will be able to read about engineers who look like them, queer women defying the odds, and strong female athletes.
All of these books will be added to our classroom library and students will have the chance to read them daily. I know that these books will help to make the world bigger for my students and inspire them to accomplish their dreams.
