Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are excited to be involved in building their student library. When they enter music contests and prepare for college auditions they need to learn opera arias and art songs. This kind of music learning prepares them well for learning at the college level.
Many of my students cannot afford to take private lessons outside of the school setting. If my students are going to experience music at a high level, they need to be exposed to great music experiences within our choir program. This includes maintaining a students' music library that my students can use to borrow music that they are interested in learning. My students love to stand by the student music library and browse through the music. Many of them come during their lunch period to find pieces that they want to learn. When they need to learn a piece of music for a solo contest or college audition, they love to grab a book and hear some of the songs that interest them. When new music gets added to the student library they are very excited. They know that the music is there for them to use. The library is organized and maintained by students and is a vital tool for them as choir students.
The most important thing about this project is the process that goes into learning difficult performance music. Learning opera and art songs involves a lot of one on one learning. Students who are successful need to pay attention for the thousands of details that need to be mastered to succeed at a high level. Students who are interested in learning at such a high level need to be encouraged to set high goals. If they are successful in this kind of learning at the high school level it will set them up for great learning experiences if they decide to continue their study of music at the collegiate level.
In Their Own Words
The goal of the this project is to promote learning that is partly directed by students. We love the music library! We are interested in organizing and maintaining a collection of music that we can use for the various projects that take place throughout the school year. We are interested in collecting a wider selection of music that will meet our different needs.
This project will give my friends and me a chance to share ideas about some of the cool pieces of music that we have worked on. Interacting with other choir students that are interested in singing great solo and small ensemble pieces is encouraging. It is good for us as students to motivate each other. Our teacher does a great job of pointing us in the right directions. It will be great to see my fellow choir members and me taking steps to advance our music interests.
I have been part of the choir for four years. I have seen students perform great music at concerts and performances. Our student library is such an important part of our success as choir members. One of the greatest challenges is that we have very little access to this kind of music outside of the school setting. I know that providing students with these kinds of school resources is a great part of the music that we will learn in our high school experience.
