Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Over the past four-plus years, a grassroots movement has been stirring in the center of Kansas City, Missouri, to open a new, free charter school that offers something new: a school that provides an excellent public education focused on developing and demonstrating understanding while building connections within a diverse community. Our school was first piloted by five community members who wished to have better elementary education options for KC's children.
After research, The Community School Initiative wrote an RFP and rallied hundreds of families together to start our school on its founding journey, and here we are in year two: facing new challenges and obstacles with a larger student body and added grade level.
We are making a huge impact on the KC educational climate, but need help to provide our students with the resources to be their best.
It is a bit of a tumultuous time in education in our country with tighter budgets and state politics that can interfere with what is best for our kiddos. Knowing that it takes a village to raise a child, it takes many selfless strangers like yourself to support and sustain a great school. We are so grateful for you.
My Project
We have been using watercolors nonstop this school year, as they are a great tool for beginner artists to get used to mixing colors, using paint and creating abstract artworks.
In asking students what their favorite material we used, one student told me, "Watercolor, silly.
It gets me so excited when I come into class and see the paints out. It lets me express myself. A pencil does not do it the same."
We are about one class period away from being out, so we need simple refills of watercolor paint, watercolor pencils and construction paper crayons.
We have new large watercolor paper and no paint! We are excited to begin planning our second and third trimester with watercolor once we know that we will have enough to supply all students with their own watercolor kit.
