My Students
Our school is in an urban area in Virginia. We take pride in being the most diverse elementary school in our district and represent about 30 different languages that are spoken by our students. Our students and teachers love books and make reading a special part of each day. Along with motivating our students to read books they enjoy, our teachers are always working to increase our students' academic achievement and social-emotional skills. We are proud of our school community!
My Project
Mo Willems is famous for writing his Elephant and Piggie books and Pigeon books. These books make people of all ages laugh and are full of speech bubbles with different animals talking. This is an authentic way to support students' understanding of the importance of reading with expression and using various voices to sound like different characters. These silly books are a perfect way for students to read with other students, listen to fluent adults read, or practice rereading funny and enjoyable books. The characters are familiar and the plots easy to follow so students can just focus on reading fluently.
