This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students love reading books! Many of my students do not have access to books at home, so it is essential that our classroom library be well-stocked with books on their reading levels.
I'm a first grade teacher in Brooklyn.
My school is a Title I school, and approximately 84% of its students receive free lunch. The neighborhood contains one of New York City's largest public housing developments, and most of my students reside there. Due to the geographic location of the neighborhood, there are few trains and bus routes servicing the community, so my students are very isolated from all of the bells and whistles of New York City.
My Project
Every week, my students borrow at least 7 books from the classroom library to read throughout the week at home. With 21 students in my class, that means that at any given time 140+ books are checked out of the classroom library. Our classroom library is depleted and does not have enough leveled books - especially for my lowest-level students. Due to the limited funding for basic supplies in my school district, new books to supplement my classroom library are not possible. I want all of my students to become successful readers, but they cannot do this if they do not have access to books on their levels. These leveled readers would be a wonderful addition to our classroom library and would make it possible for all of my students to have access to books they can read.
With these new additions to the classroom library, my students will be able to continue to borrow high-interest books from the classroom library on a weekly basis.
By helping to place books into the hands of my students, a lifelong love of reading will be fostered.
