Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Talking about music is like dancing about architecture." (Playing by Heart) Music is intended to be actively experienced and performed. I am starting a small concert band this year and currently the school does not own any band instruments. My students are already eager to learn and work hard.
I am the new music teacher at this school and even in the short time of knowing my students, they have shown me their immense excitement and passion for playing instruments.
I teach over 300 6th and 7th grade students with minimal supplies and funds, yet they are still eager to come to music class. We are considered a high need school with 90% of our students qualifying for free/reduced lunch, which means most of my students cannot afford to have outside music lessons or buy/rent instruments on their own. On the first day of school the question that I hear the most is "Are we going to/when do we get to play instruments?"
My Project
Establishing a band with proper equipment would reach my students of all different backgrounds while building confidence, team-building skills, and skills used in their other subject areas. My students are already eager to learn, work hard and put on concerts. They have shown me that they will make a commitment to staying in band, building the program for their years in middle school and to continue in high school. They are already asking about a summer program! All they are missing is the instruments to make it happen!
My students have immense creativity and a passion for learning music.
They have been fundraising all year to be able to have the experience of playing an instrument. Unfortunately, we still do not have the equipment needed to start a successful program. Having clarinets to play would give them that opportunity that so many of us had when we were in school. Experiencing playing an instrument would push my students to grow as students, and as people, no matter where they came from.
