This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in an urban area of Virginia that has a high amount of poverty and low income. We learn in an older Title I school where 100% of my students receive free breakfast and free lunch. My classroom is made up of much more than percentages and words. We are made up of imagination, creativity, confidence, and encouragement. We do not give up on ourselves or others. As their teacher, I try to make every lesson engaging and hands-on to provide them with the skills they need to further their education. I want them to enjoy learning! I try my best to make sure that my classroom is a safe and kid-friendly environment. Even though school funding my be diminishing, our goals and our excitement to learn does not!
My Project
A listening center is the best way for students to work together, or independently, and practice reading fluency and comprehension. Students will listen to familiar and unfamiliar texts and apply the reading skills and strategies that have been taught to them. Struggling students will be able to practice their letter knowledge, letter sounds and sight words that are very essential to the reading process. This will help them gain confidence in their own listening and reading experiences. The CD player provided will be of great use outside of my literacy program. I will be able to include instructional songs in other subject areas. This center will be a daily use in my classroom.
