Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are enthusiastic about learning English. They love to learn and use new English words. They get excited whenever they can demonstrate how they can use English words.
I am always looking for ways to help these eager learners learn and master the English language.
Our school of about 530 students is located in rural Eastern North Carolina.
About half of the students are Spanish speakers. My students are all English Language Learners, whose levels of English range from knowing only a few words to being able to do most of the classwork that their native English speaking peers do.
The school is high poverty, with 100% free and reduced lunch. The parents of my students work very hard, often working more than one job. In spite of the long hours they spend working, they find the time to come out to the school for special events. They want their children to be successful, graduate from high school, and even go to college. Their parents want the children to grow up to have good jobs and be good citizens. Consequently, they encourage their children to work very hard in school, learn all they can, and respect their teachers
My Project
My students enjoy singing songs and chanting poems. They also practice their reading and writing each time they come to my ESL classroom. One thing they cannot do is record their voices, listen to the recording, and compare their recorded speech to the example. The students will use these ten headphones with microphones to listen to videos and audio clips, but especially to record their own voices! They will be able to compare their pronunciation with the pronunciation of the recorded speaker. In addition, they will also be able to record and listen to the narration for their projects.
If we are able to get ten headsets, students would have more opportunities to practice speaking and listening, thereby helping them improve their English more quickly.
In addition, instead of having to wait and record narration for their projects one by one, several students could work at the same time to record their narration for their projects. They will be able to create more projects and, again, learn more quickly!
