This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are hungry to READ READ READ and I want to be able to satisfy their appetites with some juicy books!
My students are ESE and ELL.
They come from single parent families and low income homes. We are a Title 1 school, meaning over Over 65% of the students qualify for the free lunch program and will show up early to school to receive free breakfast. The odds are frequently against my students, but with the gift of literacy they will be able to conquer the world!
My Project
There is so much that can be done with a class set of books! Students will be able to buddy read these novels, while asking questions and having discussions with their partners. They can also silently read in order to improve reading stamina. I can also use these books in a small group lesson to practice and build comprehension skills. As a class we can have book "chats" where we talk about different literary elements. The end result will be my students' appetites for reading will continue to grow!
Having multiple copies of the same book will allow for an author study in the classroom; students will be able to practice fluency at centers, and during small group students will be able to read books and have book discussions.
Students will also have the benefit of taking the books home and being assigned to projects and chapters to read. Through these activities students will become more excited about reading and start to read more independently.
