Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The biggest challenge for me, as a teacher, is making sure my students' needs are met and they are meeting the grade level expectations placed on them.
My students are already at a disadvantage because of their social economic status at home.
I am trying to even the playing field and provide them with an opportunity to be successful in school and improve their futures. I have a wonderful group of mixed ages in my classroom (3 years old to 5 years old). Several of them range from mild disabilities to severe while a few may be considered "gifted" in the future. Many of them are below grade level expectations and don't have many opportunities to learn at home. With so many different abilities in the classroom I want to be able to engage them and help them learn in a way that stimulates them and makes them feel good about school.
My Project
Many of my students are having a difficult time retaining information the way the curriculum is currently set up. The materials I am requesting will provide more concrete ways for the students to manipulate, view and touch words in order to help them learn the concepts. The teaching tubs are the best things to accomplish this. They contain items that all begin with the sound of each letter (tub A will have a toy apple, an alligator, etc). This will help us visually identify and connect the letter sound to physical items that we can touch and manipulate. There are also several games I am requesting to help reinforce rhyming and alliteration, as well as alphabet stamps so the students can try to put their own words together.
These children will leave this classroom and move on to elementary schools with a good foundation set for their future learning success.
I am positive the impact will carry over and help fuel their academic success for years to come.
