Our school serves a diverse group of students in rural Northern California. Seventy percent of our students live in poverty and over sixty percent are English Language Learners. Despite these circumstances, everyday I am greeted with smiling faces, as our kids love to come to school.
Four hundred students attend our school and the every staff member works hard to provide a safe, joyful learning environment.
"I'm so glad to be here today," my students and I sing every morning, in a daily song of affirmation set to the uplifting Superman theme. These kids really are super and singing every morning starts our day out right!
Our students are motivated and want to learn. They love going to our school's STEAM lab once per week, where they participate in hands-on science, garden, engineering and art activities.
My students and I come together in our classroom gathering place on the rug many times throughout the day. We share news, lessons and thinking on our classroom easel. Unfortunately, our old easel will be moving to a kinder classroom when my teaching partner and I start new teaching assignments in August.
My third graders and I need a new easel where we will model our thinking, store our oft-used supplies and gather as a learning community.
Each morning, our morning meeting is shared on our easel. During math, our magnetic manipulatives are used on the magnetic whiteboard surface. Our science, writing and reading lessons are also shared here. An easel is a necessary part of our classroom routines!
