My students walk into the classroom every day full of love, energy, and excitement on what the day brings. Despite the hardships they may face, my second-grade scholars love to laugh, smile, and love. I aspire to enhance their experiences and create an environment where they feel confident in what they have achieved.
My classroom is filled with scholars of diverse cultures and identities.
I’m eager to provide opportunities for my scholars to connect their learning to their own culture and strive to create content that serves as both a mirror and a window. I cannot wait to celebrate their strengths, their goals, and their accomplishments.
I teach at a Title I school in Minnesota where over 88 percent of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. I am in a classroom where my students speak a variety of different languages. Forty-nine percent of the students at my school identify as Asian, 29% identify as African American, 11% identify as Hispanic, 8% identify as Caucasian, and 1% identify as American Indian.
My Project
My class did a library analysis of our classroom library. The results were very shocking! Our classroom demographics are 34.8% Asian, 30.4% Hispanic/Latinx, 26.1% Black/African American, and 8.7% White. When we looked at all of our books in our classroom, we tallied up the races of all the main characters. We found out that 53.4% of our books had White characters, 26.7% Black/African American characters, 9.9% had Asian characters, 6.9% Hispanic/Latino, and 3.1% Native American characters. Our library demographics did not match our classroom demographics at all! My students should be able to see themselves as characters in books and our classroom library did not do that at all. This is why we are hoping to get diverse chapter books that provide not just a mirror for the students but also a window.
