My Students

Young children are innately curious about the world around them and about the people in it. The first graders that I teach in Belmont Public Schools are no exception. The students in my class are kind, accepting and inquisitive. They are diverse in terms of race, ethnicity, religion and languages spoken and they are excited by noticing the similarities and differences between themselves and their classmates. However, due to the high cost of homes in the district I teach in, many minority populations are very underrepresented in our schools. Minority students may look around their classroom and see no other students that look like them. As we know, representation matters. Having books that feature diverse characters helps to expose children in my classroom to people they may not encounter in their community otherwise.

My first graders are also just starting down the path towards becoming lifelong avid readers.

Having books to read with characters that children can identify with helps children feel engaged and motivated to read. Please help to make sure that we are getting books with diverse characters in the hands of all our young readers.

My Project

Elementary educators in Belmont Public Schools recognize the importance of putting more books featuring diverse characters into the hands of all children. My colleagues and I have been working hard to build classroom libraries that recognize all diverse experiences, including (but not limited to) LGBTQIA, Native, people of color, gender diversity, people with disabilities, and ethnic, cultural, and religious minorities.

The "read aloud" is many children's favorite part of the school day, whether that school day is remote or in person.

With each read aloud, we hope that children will find mirrors where they see themselves reflected as well as windows where they can peek into the lives of others who are different from them.
