Help me give my students access to an excellent writing handbook with up-to-date and engaging text examples, plus a selection of high interest non-fiction, graphic fiction, and novels from diverse perspectives.
This is my first year teaching high school, and I have been delighted by the excitement of my students to read! I teach a combination of traditional 9th grade English classes as well as a block class for intermediate English Learners. All of my students are reading books of their choice every day— most enter the classroom and hop back into their book without any prompting— and I have so enjoyed watching my students choose books to read and truly fall in love with stories. My students come from a variety of educational backgrounds, and there is a huge range of skill levels and interests represented in my classes. I want to provide each student with a text that will challenge and engage them, improving their skill and enjoyment in reading.
My Project
The books from this project will be placed in our classroom library and highlighted with book talks to inspire students to select these texts for independent reading.
Many of my students do not have access to high-interest, age-appropriate texts in their home, but when they have access to the right books, they become engaged in reading books of their choice for pleasure.
They begin to self-identify as readers, even if they haven't finished a whole book in years.
My classroom needs more non-fiction to further entice readers who may be resistant to novels, and graphic fiction to pull in the most reluctant students.
