Our school is a large public school with over 800 students. Our students come from various cultural and economic backgrounds which makes our school special and diverse.
My students come to class each day ready to learn with a smile on their faces.
Ages in our class range from 6 to 7 years old and these students already have such a desire to learn. I want to be able to help each student achieve their goals and instill a lifelong love for learning.
My Project
Imagine a world in which all children can see themselves in the pages of a book. A world where students don't have to mix crayons or markers together to try to find their perfect skin tone. This is a world I'd like to live in!
My goal as a teacher is to promote literature that reflects and honors the lives of all young people.
Children should be able to read about characters that they identify with. While it's crucial that teachers convey the basic rules and concepts of various subjects, it is equally important that they also teach the importance of ideas like compassion, empathy, diversity and equality.
I have personally seen a student light up when they find a book with a main character that looks or acts like they do. I have chosen books for this Donors Choose project from a recommended list of diverse books that make a difference in the classroom. We will use these books during read alouds, silent reading time and book studies. The Multicultural Crayola Crayons and markers will be given to students for projects about themselves or other projects where they will need to depict humans. Having a crayon or marker that reflects the skin your in can make all the difference to a student.
Please help me by putting more books featuring diverse characters into the hands of all children.
