My Students

My K-2 students are enthusiastic learners who love to read and visit the library to listen to stories and borrow new books to bring home to share with their families. Many students tell me that the library is their favorite place in the school!

I work at a K-8 school in a high-poverty urban district where not all my students have access to high-quality children's literature or the ability to visit the public library.

The district has limited resources, and we are facing severe budget cuts for the coming school year. All funds for library books were cut from the budget.

Our student population is diverse with students hailing from over 20 countries and speaking just as many languages!

My Project

A small group of parents at my school have organized a committee to plan events that teach about and celebrate the diversity of our school's population. We believe it is important for students to see characters like themselves and their classmates depicted positively in the books they read. The committee approached me with an idea for an event that would run concurrently with the International Day celebration at the school, held at the end of May. We would invite parents to an evening read-in, using the new books (along with others we have in the library). Even though the books are picture books for younger students, we are planning to invite our older students from grades 3-8 to join us in reading to the K-2 students. These books will remain in the library's collection for many years to come.
