This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Seniors at our schoolcome to class with a variety of skills, challenges, and an enthusiasm to learn. As the majority of my students come from low-income families, I am on the lookout for ways to bring contemporary and diverse literature into my classroom.

As streaming video has become more available and popular, students are quickly losing skills in reading, writing, vocabulary, and context clues.

There is an increasing need to support student literacy with multiple and diverse texts.

My Project

My students come from varied and diverse backgrounds. They need to read books written by people like them, that are about people like them. The verse novels chosen for this project, Long Way Down, and The Poet X, reach into the world of the diverse teenage reader asking them to grapple with dynamic and life-changing decisions. Each novel, told through a series of poems, craft a story that is enjoyable to read and gripping in the appearance on the page. With no funding for books in my school district, this project will bring new and contemporary literature to my students.
