My students need diverse books that are mirrors that reflect themselves, windows into the worlds of others, and sliding doors that allow them to walk in the shoes of another.
"You don't need a cape to be a hero. You just need to care." -Kid President
The students in my classroom are artists, scientists, authors, explorers, mathematicians, leaders, readers, and above all friends.
They are are an energetic group of 30 third graders who walk into class every day with smiles on their faces excited to learn about each other and the world around them. I believe it is my job to create a space where all students feel welcomed, loved, supported and safe to take risks, make mistakes, and learn.
My Project
Books are a powerful tool that can be used to teach tolerance, build empathy, and develop confidence. However, when children can't see themselves represented in the books we put in our classroom, we convey the powerful message that they don't belong.
I want to fill my library with books that not only reflect the diverse students that make up my class but also the diverse people that make up our world.
I have carefully selected these books to meet my goal of representing my diverse group of students, promoting tolerance, and building compassion and empathy among my students.
Thank you so much for your help in creating a class where everyone feels welcome and students navigate the world with kindness, compassion, and tolerance!
