My Students

My students are in a 10th, 11th, and 12th graders in a urban district. We are smaller in size than neighboring districts, representing a unique group of students.

We are a diverse group learners.

Students in my district represent 92 countries and over 50 languages spoken. My students complete the range of socio-economic status. Some do not have access to books. Some have a library full at home. My goal is to make this gap smaller. They are amazingly open minded students who love to think and be challenged everyday.

My Project

Reading changes the world. Reading creates empathy. Reading makes us social. Reading brings us understanding. My students need books that will engage and teach them. They need books that they can relate to and that can challenge them.

Last year, 92% of my students said they read more than they had year before.

My classroom library is one key to keeping this reading momentum going. I hope to continue this by providing my students with titles that are responsive to them right now in terms of genre and content.

When a students asks for a book recommendation, my goal is always to give them at least five options. By adding the titles on this list, it will make this goal possible. Many titles on this list address issues they see everyday: mental health, LGBTQ, abuse, and discrimination. There is a range of nonfiction, fiction, young adult, and poetry to meet all students interests.
