My students need books that reflect who they are and the situations they live in. If they can't see themselves reflected in their reading, they won't read.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the privilege of working in an IB middle school within an urban Title 1 district. This means that my students come to the door from many different backgrounds and with many unique challenges, but are studying to become the leaders who can overcome these challenges.
My students are a highly energetic group of seventh graders who need to ignite their spark for reading!
My students love to debate, relate to their learning, and really see the possibilities the world has for them. I want to help capture that passion for possibility and turn the possible into the achievable.
My Project
I teach students who are reluctant readers. They need highly engaging books to get them to practice reading. One of the ways we engage with reading is being able to see ourselves in text.
To get students reading, they need books that reflect their lives and their situations.
Last year, when I introduced books by authors like Angie Thomas, Jason Reynolds, and Nic Stone, my students couldn't put the books down! They begged me for more reading time! I am looking to expand my library of diverse books to better reflect my students' backgrounds and get them to see reading as relevant to their lives.
