I teach students with special needs in kindergarten, first, and second grade. This year, all my students are in first grade and they have a huge love for learning! Every one of my students needs different levels of support in social, emotional, and academic areas. We spend a lot of time learning about social skills and self-regulation as well as reading, social studies, science, writing, and math.
My students refuse to let any challenges they face stand in their way.
They are hardworking and motivated despite some of the unique obstacles they face. I consider myself very lucky to be able to work with such dedicated and amazing kids.
My Project
My first graders are hardworking students who push themselves every day to do their best. They love to read and learn more about things that are new to them or that they don't understand. For this project, I am asking for 20 different picture books that encompass different races, culture, and history.
These books will encourage my students to be more accepting and appreciative of differences, as well as introduce them to new cultures, historic events, and experiences.
Research has shown that children look for themselves in books. Armed with this knowledge, we need to help students see themselves and a more accurate depiction of the world around them in the books they read.
